  1. What is transportation?  How would you define it?  What are the services and components involved?  What value does it provide to its customers?
  2. How has transportation played a significant role in history, economics, environment and safety?  What are the financial and safety impacts on us?
  3. What effect does transportation have on the overall price of different types of product?  What types of product do transportation costs have a significant impact? What types of products are transportation customer service level critical?
  4. Who are the stakeholders of the transportation system.  How are they involved and what affects them?
  5. What are the current national trends in transportation for gov't regulation? gov't spending? employment? technology? service offerings? safety?
  6. What type of units do we measure transportation demand?  What problems are associated with the freight measure?
  7. Has freight growth grown during the last forty years?  In dollar and ton-miles, which modes ship the most? least?
  8. What are landed costs and derived demand?  Can these items affect companies location or shipping strategy?
  9. What are the service components of freight demand?  Which is the most important?
  10. What are the types of passenger travel?  What are the primary differences?  concerns?  Which modes provide the most passenger-miles private and for-hire?

  11. Why does the gov't concern itself with transportation?  How do they involve themselves in transportation?  Who sets policy?
  12. What types of regulation are there?  Which are increasing? decreasing?  What are the primary eras of regulation?  What were the goals of each period?
  13. What is the difference between interstate and intrastate?  What effect is there on the transportation industry in terms of laws? funding? enforcement?
  14. What are the primary anti-trust regulations?  Do they apply to transportation companies?  If so how?
  15. When did the current wave of deregulation begin?  What are the primary acts in motor and rail?  What was the effect of these laws?
  16. Which gov't agency(ies) is responsible for transportation?  What are its general responsibilities?  What modes does it represent and regulate?
  17. What are the four types of carriers?  What are the differences between them?  How has deregulation changed them?  Which has the most vehicles?
  18. What effect can supply and/or demand have at the aggregate national level on price?  local level?  What is the time period for change at each level? 
  19. Do we have a national transportation policy?  What is it or is it not?
  20. Why does the government what to make policy?  Who are the people that provide input into the policy?
  21. How are the individual modes supported by policy?
  22. What has been the trend for promotion over the last 20 years?
