LOGT 3231 Exam 3 Review Material

For Each of the Modes (Air, Domestic Water, Intermodal)

  1. What are the advantages and disadvantages?
  2. What is the cost structure?
  3. What trends have occurred since deregulation?
  4. Which types of carriers are there (common, contract, exempt, private)?
  5. Do a few or a lot of companies dominate their industry? Who are the primary companies in their industry?
  6. What types of equipment do they use?
  7. How can companies within the mode gain economies of scale?
  8. What level of competition is there? Who are the primary competitors (inter/intra)? What is the market structure of the mode (pure comp., oligopoly, etc.)?
  9. Who supports each mode's infrastructure and how is it funded?
  10. What is the relative length of haul for each mode? Which has the longest and shortest and why?

 

For All of the Modes (to include motor and rail)

  1. Be able to compare and contrast the various modes based on the basic determinates for selection (you remember capacity, speed, etc.).
  2. Which modes ship the most freight between cities in terms of ton-miles? revenue?
  3. Given real world situations, choose which mode would be the BEST choice to ship a product based on your boss's or customer's requirements.

 

Domestic Water

  1. What is the role of the Corp of Engineers in the domestic water system? How do they work to maintain the waterways of the USA?
  2. Which portion of the domestic water carries most of the traffic (inland, coastal, Great Lakes)?
  3. What special types of equipment are used in the barge industry?
  4. What is the primary product moved by water carriers (domestic)?
  5. What types of carriers dominate this mode?
  6. Which terms and equipment are unique to this mode?
  7. Since deregulation, has there been any real changes to the number of carriers or the amount of freight?
  8. How big is "big" in this industry, carrying capacities, size, etc.?

 
Air

  1. What government agencies are involved with air?
  2. Does the industry use the Point-to-Point or Hub-and-Spoke Systems? Which airlines and air cargo companies use the Point-to-Point and Hub-and-Spoke Systems?
  3. What is the difference between an integrated carrier and a non-integrated carrier?
  4. What are the tools used to compete in the airline industry? "Yield" pricing? Survival pricing? price matching?
  5. What is a load factor? What are "typical" load factors?
  6. Who are the largest/biggest air carriers: passenger and cargo?
  7. Which airports are the busiest: passenger and cargo?
  8. What is the new "super" big passenger aircraft from Europe and what is Boeing's response?

 

Intermodal

  1. What is the difference between containerization and transload?
  2. What modes have experienced dramatic intermodal growth recently? What are the corridors they operate?
  3. What are TOFC, COFC, DST, panamax and post-panamax?
  4. What are the advantages and disadvantages to intermodal?
  5. Has intermodal grown or shrunk over the last thirty years?
  6. Is air intermodal keeping pace with the land side? Why or why not?

 

Pipelines

  1. What are the primary products shipped in pipelines?  Are they any “strange” or solid products shipped this way?

  2. What has been the trend for the growth of infrastructure and why?

  3. Why is the majority of the pipeline network based in one area of the country?

  4. What is the longest pipeline in the USA?

  5. What is the most pressing current issue in the pipeline industry?

  6. What was the key point(s) about the pipeline company covered in class by the student presentation?
