  Study Guide - Exam 3

Chapters Covered: 4, 7, & 12 plus articles & assignments handed out in class or in the packet

Format: 30-50 multiple choice questions and essay questions/problem

Suggested study strategy:

  1. Read the chapters and materials handed out in class.
  2. Review the discussion questions and chapter slides that I provided in class.
  3. Rework any problems we did in class or for homework.

Potential essay questions:

Make sure you remember the maps for Exam 3.

Discuss three ways that air carriers are trying to prepare for the anticipated future growth of volume in the industry (Hint: look at the articles that I handed out as well as your notes).

Discuss the term “DIM weight” as used in the airline industry. Be prepared to calculate the cost of pricing an air cargo shipment using weight or space.

What are the types of ocean carrier, advantages/disadvantages, operating process, and equipment used/needed for each?

What are the benefits/weaknesses of international air and water transportation?  When are each appropriate and for what types of products?

What are the types of shipping firms?  How do they operate?

What types of ships are there?  What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?  How many are there (number and percentage)?  What is the trend in new ship construction?  What is the amount you can store in a ship and how do you tell?

Discuss the documents identified in Chapter 12, what are their purpose, when are they needed, etc.  Stress the insurance portion of the chapter and the related documents.

Why is marine insurance needed?  What is special about marine insurance?  What is an insurable interest?  What are the types of insurance?  What is not covered by insurance?

Be sure that you can work all of the problems that were covered either in class or through the homework.

Remember, the discussion questions from each chapter, article content, end of chapter items, in-class/homework problems, current topics and quiz are also fair game for essay questions.
