Exam 1 – Mid-Term

The exam is a combination of multiple choice (48), one word answers (4) and essays (4 of 6 with one required).  It is neither easy, nor hard.  You will take most of the three hours to complete it; so plan your time accordingly.

Below is a list of possible essay questions.  If a topic is not on the list, it does not mean it is unimportant.  But rather, the topic was a better fit in the multiple choice section.  I will be in the office Monday and Tue.  I have to travel Wed and will not be able to respond to email until late in the day.

Likely Topics for Essay Questions:

  1. What is the governments’ role in and reasons for supporting international logistics?
  2. Describe the current seaport competition with selection factors.
  3. Discuss gift giving and bribery in international business.  Why is this a difficult situation?  How should a USA company handle this challenge?
  4. What are the international legal systems with examples?
  5. What are the views of free trade and protectionism and the role of GATT/WTO?
  6. What are the various types of barriers (tariffs, non-tariff) to international trade?
  7. Define and discuss the various levels of cooperation/integration between nations (cooperative agreements through political union).  Don’t forget the various current groups (NAFTA, EU, …)
  8. What are the elements of culture and how would they affect USA business people?
  9. What techniques can international companies can use to reduce overseas risk?
  10. What is the current state of inland transportation systems in the various areas of the world that we discussed in class?
  11. Who are the intermediaries that can help international logisticians?  What is the role of each?
