Biography of

Stephen M. Rutner, Ph.D.

Education

           
Currently, Steve is a Professor of Logistics at Georgia Southern University.  Steve received his Ph.D. in Logistics and Transportation from the University of Tennessee in 1995.  Prior to that, he earned a MBA in Marketing and Logistics from the University of Alabama.  Steve also has a B.A. in History from Millersville University of Pennsylvania.

 

Professional Experience

            Steve has a diverse background both in and out of logistics and transportation.  After college, he spent three years on active duty in the U.S. Army.  His responsibilities included transportation, logistics and managerial duties.  After he left the Army, he spent over twenty years in the Alabama National Guard and the US Army Reserve as a Transportation Officer.  This includes two tours in the Middle East as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He also spent time at IBM working as a Strategic Analyst in the Service Sector Division for Alliances.

 

Research

            Steve’s research background covers a number of major streams of interest.  He has worked in the area of strategic alliances and partnerships in transportation.  These and research projects have led to publications in the International Journal of Logistics Management and Physical Distribution, Transportation Journal, International Journal of Transportation Planning and Technology, Transportation Quarterly, International Journal of Logistics, and others.  He has also made over fifty presentations to academic and professional organizations such as CLM, IDEA, Air Cargo Conference and others.

 

Service

            Steve supports the logistics field in a number of ways.  He is the former Director of the Southern Center of Logistics and Intermodal Transportation at Georgia Southern University.  Currently, he is the Director of the PhD Program of Logistics/Supply Chain Management.  Also, he has worked with the Georgia Freight Bureau’s Logistics Foundation of America to develop the ITRAN training course for transportation professionals.  Another area he supports is organizing the Intermodal Distribution Education Academy and American Society of Transportation and Logistics annual conference.
